History of Terrebonne
The little town of Terrebonne on Deschutes County's northern boundary was originally named Hillman, in reference to James J. Hill and E. H. Harriman, railroad magnates who famously competed to finish a rail line to Bend. However, after a local business man named Hillman got into trouble and generated notoriety, the people of Hillman voted to change their name to Terrebonne, or good earth.
