SUMMARY:November History Pub: The Deschutes River; A History
DESCRIPTION:November 17\, 2026 Note that this presentation is a week earlier than our usual “Last Tuesday of the Month” due to the Thanksgiving Holiday \nThe Deschutes River is one of the world’s largest spring-fed rivers\, renowned for its steady flow and stunning vistas. Humans lived along the Deschutes for thousands of years without altering the river or its flow. However\, that balance shifted when early settlers began using its waters for power and irrigation. In the early twentieth century\, railroad companies blasted their way up the lower canyon\, while the timber industry turned sections of the upper river into an industrial zone. In recent decades\, shifting views of river ecology\, scenic values\, and recreation have brought new perspectives on the river and renewed hope for its future. Historian and author Glenn Voelz tells the story of how the modern Deschutes came to be. \nAbout the Presenter: Glenn Voelz served as an intelligence officer for 25 years in the Army\, holding senior leadership positions at the Pentagon\, the White House Situation Room\, and NATO headquarters in Brussels\, Belgium. He was an assistant professor of history at West Point and has authored several books on Oregon history\, including his new book\, The Deschutes River: A History. He serves as a board member of the Deschutes County Historical Society and the Deschutes Historical Museum. \n“The Deschutes River: A History” Books will be available for purchase at this event. \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m.\nPresentation begins at 7:00 p.m. \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS

SUMMARY:Transgressors Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join the Central Oregon Two Spirit Coalition and the Deschutes Historical Museum for an event to celebrate our Two Spirit community and the opening of the exhibit Transgressors\, a special touring exhibition by Chachalu Tribal Museum and Cultural Center\, presenting now and future Indigiqueer ancestors who move beyond boundaries in life and art. The community is welcome to come at 5:00 p.m. for a light meal provided by Spork\, and other refreshments. The Central Oregon Two Spirit Coalition will do a short presentation at 5:30 p.m. to share what Two-Spirit means\, how colonization has impacted gender identity and sexual orientation in Native communities\, and stories about Two-Spirit ancestors and present-day community members. \nWe will be featuring an art piece and fashion collection created by Mateja Sutterlee (Warm Springs). The art piece represents the layers of realizing their Two-Spirit identity. The clothing collection is influenced by traditions and has been inspired by modern fashion ideas. They all individually represent what Mateja views as the gendered spirits in today’s world. \nTransgressors will be on display in the second floor northwest gallery from November 17\, 2026 – January 16\, 2027 \nTouring exhibit made possible by: \nWith additional support from : \n                            \n

SUMMARY:Holiday Gelatin Salad Show 2026
DESCRIPTION:Holiday Gelatin Salad Show\nSaturday\, December 12\nDoes your family have a weird gelatin salad that only appears at the holidays? We need to see it! Join the Deschutes Historical Museum in a celebration of weird vintage salad recipes at the HOLIDAY GELATIN SALAD SHOW on Saturday\, December 12. Due to overwhelming joy and attendance\, this year’s event will be held at the Central Library located at 61956 SE Santorini Street. Viewing begins at 12 pm with judging beginning at 12:30. \nEnter creations in one of five different categories: \n\nDessert Salads — a molded creation Grandma would be proud of!\nSavory Salads — Gelatin isn’t just for dessert!\nFamily Salad Recipe — This category is for family recipes\, sweet or savory\, that have been passed through the generations. We love it if you have a photograph of the salad from a family gathering.\nNailed It! Best Ooops You Tried — Just because you bought the mold doesn’t mean you can get it out of the mold. But we don’t care! You gave it your best and we still want to see it.\nGelatin as Art – Nonedible art creations are welcome in this new category focused on form\, not flavor.\n\nEntries in all categories (except art) will be judged on presentation\, flavor\, and overall appeal. Recipes must be included with your entry form. One winner will be selected in each category\, with a Best in Show award selected from the category winners. Only judges are allowed to taste the salads. \nBring your salad\, recipe\, and completed entry form to the Central Library between 11-12 pm on Saturday\, December 12 to register. \nHoliday Gelatin Salad Entry Form 2026 \n
