SUMMARY:August History Pub: Joel Palmer and The Shaping of Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Lang’s new book\, The Country for Me: Joel Palmer and the Shaping of Oregon\, is the first full biography of Joel Palmer\, a Canadian-born American who played a central role in the political and economic shaping of Oregon. Having traveled on the Oregon Trail three times\, he wrote a popular trail guidebook used by later emigrants. Palmer’s experience in public life and government service during his first five years in Oregon led to his federal appointment as superintendent of Indian Affairs for the territory. Palmer is honored by Native Nations in Oregon because he generally considered their conditions and honestly presented a federal government pledge to protect and support their interests. He did not use his office for personal enrichment\, a legacy that did not adhere to most federal agents in their dealings with Native peoples. \nWilliam L. Lang presents Palmer’s life story as a means to better understand the context and realities of change in Oregon as it transitioned from a contested territory to a state. \nWilliam L. Lang is professor emeritus of history at Portland State University and the founding editor of Oregon Encyclopedia of History and Culture. Lang is the author and editor of numerous books\, including The Country of Me: Joel Palmer and the Shaping of Oregon\, and the co-author of Two Centuries of Lewis and Clark: Reflections on the Voyage of Discovery. Lang is the great-great-great-grandson of Joel Palmer. \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m.\nPresentation begins at 7:00 p.m. \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS

SUMMARY:July History Pub: Stink Water or Mountain Spring Water: A Century of Bend’s Water System
DESCRIPTION:In 1923\, Bend’s source for drinking water\, the Deschutes River\, was condemned by the state of Oregon as “unfit for human consumption.” What were the citizens of Bend to do? Would they filter it or look for a new supply? What would it cost\, and who would pay for it? \nPatrick Griffiths is an award-winning water resource administrator and water policy expert with over 22 years of leadership in municipal water rights management\, water conservation\, and regional water governance. As the former water resources manager for Bend\, Oregon\, he created the WaterWise program and successfully planned for the water demands of a rapidly growing urban population with critical environmental stewardship. Within the Deschutes River Basin\, Griffiths is widely recognized for designing innovative\, data-driven public conservation campaigns and orchestrating complex multi-party water management agreements to meet all identified new water needs. \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m.\nPresentation begins at 7:00 p.m. \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS

SUMMARY:History Pub: Women Lawyers in Oregon: 140 Years of Success\, Synergy\, and Surprises
DESCRIPTION:Since 1886\, many trailblazing women in Oregon have built successful careers in the legal profession\, some with quite unusual paths\, especially for their time. As women lawyers formed their own networking organizations\, they found synergies\, especially in state-wide collaborations. Trudy Allen presents Oregon’s history of women in the legal world\, including some surprising visibility and achievements. Trudy also covers the challenges and ongoing efforts to make lasting progress for women in the field\, and for others from underrepresented communities. \nTrudy Allen is a retired lawyer and has served as the historian for the Oregon Women Lawyers Foundation since 1999. When she was admitted to the Oregon State Bar in 1982\, she was fortunate to meet several early women lawyers and was inspired to preserve their stories. Since the mid-1980s\, Trudy has researched and written several articles for legal publications\, tracking trends of women’s admission to practicing law in Oregon and their service in the judiciary. \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m. Presentation starts at 7:00 p.m.\nClick Here for Tickets

SUMMARY:Come Along on the Oregon Trail
DESCRIPTION:Between 1841 to1869 more than 350\,000 people emigrated along the Oregon Trail. The 2\,000-mile journey was difficult and dangerous. Travelers traversed unfamiliar prairies\, deserts\, rivers\, and mountains with minimal help along the way.\nJoin Lynda Paznokas as she shares her insights into the rationale behind making the journey West\, the treacherous landscapes they crossed\, and the reality discovered at the end of the trail. Using photographs\, journal entries\, and Lynda’s own research\, “Come Along on the Oregon Trail” sheds light on misconceptions about this fascinating and complicated time in United States history.\nThis free presentation starts at 2:30 pm in the Deschutes Historical Museum’s research library.\nSpace is limited\nOn-site parking is available.\n\nLynda Paznokas’ interest in the Oregon Trail began in grade school\, captured by the Oregon Trail stories brought to life by her fourth-grade teacher. Her fascination grew while researching her family’s trail blazing history West. Over the past decade Lynda has photographed the Oregon Trail from Missouri to Oregon\, gaining a new appreciation for the journey and historical complexities comprising this moment in U.S. history.\nAs an elementary and middle school teacher she has shared her enthusiasm of history with her students. She has worked as an Elementary Curriculum Specialist for the Bend-La Pine School District and has taught future teachers at the university level.\nHer book\, Pathways of America: The Oregon Trail\, assists educators\, encouraging students to develop a variety of critical thinking skills around this subject.

SUMMARY:History Pub: About Scott Joplin and the Ragtime Spaces of Deschutes County: 1900-1918
DESCRIPTION:When Bend became a city in 1905\, ragtime music by Midwesterner Scott Joplin and other African American composers dominated entertainment venues across the US. Even in Deschutes County\, Oregon\, ragtime enlivened town life for at least 20 years\, proving unexpected ties to Tin Pan Alley and the Eastern commercial music industry at the turn of the 20th century. Joplin’s joyful compositions reflected the vibrancy of the first generation of African Americans born after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today\, Joplin’s piano rags rank among the world’s artistic masterworks. \nKendra Kay Friar\, EdD\, is an adjunct professor of music at Pacific University and the academic editor of the Journal of General Music Education. She has worked as an elementary music teacher\, a children’s choir director\, and Portland-based collaborative pianist for over 20 years. Her work has been published in Music Educators Journal\, Journal of General Music Education\, and Oregon Music Educator. In 2021\, she received the Outstanding Elementary Music Educator Award from Oregon Music Educators Association. She researches music education history to restore multicultural voices to modern teaching resources. \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m.\nPresentation begins at 7:00 p.m. \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS

SUMMARY:Read/Create: A Novel Idea Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Novel Idea: Read/Create exhibit features artwork inspired by the 2026 titles Super Sonic by Thomas Kohnstamm and the youth edition\, Hope in The Valley by Mitali Perkens. The exhibit opens Saturday\, April 11 through June 13\, 2026. \nSuper Sonic launches readers into a kaleidoscopic tale of the generations of interrelated families who breathed life into a small\, hilltop community near Seattle. The story cuts in time from the arrival of white settlers’ ships to the last indigenous landowner fighting to hold on to scraps of his ancestral home. It interweaves an opioid-addicted nineteenth-century conman-cum-civic booster\, a disgraced Navy seaman building an airplane that travels faster than sound\, a stay-at-home dad hustling to open the city’s first legal weed shop\, and a Japanese internment survivor. \nHope in The Valley follows twelve-year-old Indian-American Pandita Paul\, who doesn’t like change. She’s not ready to start middle school and leave the comforts of childhood behind. Most of all\, Pandita doesn’t want to feel like she’s leaving her mother\, who died a few years ago\, behind. Pandita is planning to spend most of her summer break reading in her favorite place\, the abandoned but majestic mansion across the street. When the town announces that the old home will be bulldozed in favor of new\, maybe affordable\, housing\, Pandita must find her voice and the strength to move on in order to give her community hope. \n“Passage of Place” by Cindy O’Neal \n“How We Cope with Change” by Gaye Lawson \nCentral Oregon’s own Mt Bachelor Quilt Guild members have been hard at work creating original artwork for the exhibit. Over 20 quilts will be on display\, representing personal interpretations of this year’s book selections. \nVisitors receive free admission by showing their library card for the duration of the exhibit. \nClick Here for more information about this year’s Novel Idea programming

SUMMARY:March History Pub: About the Changing Skyline- 100 Years of Landscape Change in Central Oregon
DESCRIPTION:During the summer of 1920\, Frederick William Cleator (1883-1957)\, a Forest Service recreational planner\, surveyed and signposted the Skyline Trail. This trail\, first laid out between Crater Lake and Mount Jefferson\, was a predecessor to the Pacific Crest Trail\, which\, decades later\, completed Cleator’s dream of a recreational trail running from Mexico to Canada. During his survey\, Cleator took more than two hundred photographs of peaks\, forest glens\, lake shorelines\, and scenic vistas. These photographs show the landscape of the time. \nIn the summer of 2020\, with the help of many friends and colleagues\, Jim O’Connor retraced Cleator’s steps\, re-photographing the landscape almost exactly a hundred years later\, to the hour. These centennial counterparts show-in ways otherwise hard to know or describe-the changing skyline\, forests\, and glaciers\, and the human influence on the Central Oregon Cascade Range. \nAbout Jim O’Connor\nJim O’Connor is a geologist in Portland\, Oregon. He is an expert in the processes and events that shape the Pacific Northwest’s remarkable and diverse scenery. Jim holds a degree in geological science from the University of Washington and a Masters and PhD from the University of Arizona. Jim has spent the last 30+ years hiking\, wading\, boating\, studying and writing about the rivers\, glaciers\, and landscapes of Oregon. \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m.\, Presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. \nClick Here to buy tickets
