SUMMARY:History Pub: The Lands Everyone Wanted with Jeff Kitchens
DESCRIPTION:The Three Sisters \nFor over 200 years the U.S. has been trying to figure out what to do with its “public” lands. From surveys to sales\, grazing to natural gas development\, national seashores to national parks\, the U.S. has had a very complicated history of land use. Our public lands are the cornerstone of the history and story of America’s relationship with its land as well as the women and men who forged that relationship. It is this legacy\, combined with the modern needs and uses of society\, that a multitude of local\, state\, and federal agencies carry upon their shoulders today. Join Jeff Kitchens\, Bend resident and a not-so-novice historian\, as he shares the story of America’s relationship with its public lands. \nJeff Kitchens has been working in public land management for over 25 years. His varied career took him throughout the U.S.\, including Oregon\, Montana\, Nevada\, and Colorado. He worked in wildland fire management\, forestry\, wildlife management\, lands and surveying\, mining\, and cultural resources\, as well as wilderness and wild and scenic rivers. He worked on national projects for two federal agencies’ headquarters and was a field forester\, spending eight hours a day marking timber on snowshoes in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In addition to helping manage public lands\, Jeff is also the owner of Innovative Leadership\, a private firm focused on developing and supporting intuitive\, resilient\, decisive\, and inclusive leaders. \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m.\, presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. \nHistory Pub Tickets

SUMMARY:Escape the Museum- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:The Curse of the Curate’s Collection\nNew Escape Room Experience\, October 10-25\, 2025\nThe Deschutes Historical Museum announces an escape room experience based on real local history. Your team of up to six players work together to find clues\, solve puzzles and escape The Curse of the Curate’s Collection.  Playing the part of Research Interns\, participants assist historian A.R. Chive in locating the missing collection before your rivals do. Oh\, and times-a-ticking… you only have 60-minutes on the clock\, so every moment is crucial to your escape. \nThe real history:\nIn 1909\, the Bend Bulletin announced that Rev. J. Anthony Mitchell\, local curate and acquirer of antiquities\, was “collecting towards a museum” for the community of Bend. After his death in 1911\, Mitchell’s relics and curios were frequently exhibited around town\, eventually finding a permanent home at the Deschutes Public Library.\nHowever\, in 1969\, the few remaining items in the collection mysteriously disappeared from a small\, locked room in the library’s basement. The only remnants of the once-noted collection\, purchased by the public and the city of Bend in 1912 to form a city museum\, were never found… Until now!\n\nThe Case of the Curate’s Collection escape room experience will kick off October 10 and 11\, with additional dates throughout the month of October.\nTickets go on sale October 1 CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS \nA fundraiser and membership drive\, Escape the Museum is sold as an immersive adventure for up to six people. Escape the Museum cost for non-members $180/hour session for up to six players\, and Museum members is $150/hour session for up to six players.  As a bonus\, each non-member purchasing a session receives one free household membership. Grab your friends and family\, form a team\, and get ready to uncover the location of Father Mitchell’s collection. For more information contact the Deschutes Historical Museum. \n

SUMMARY:November History Pub: Oregon Search and Rescue Presented by Glenn Voelz
DESCRIPTION:Oregon’s long tradition of volunteer search and rescue dates to the territorial days\, when good Samaritans and mountain men came to aid those in need. On the coast\, surfmen of the U.S. Life-Saving Service protected mariners traversing the “Graveyard of the Pacific.” In the early twentieth century\, outdoor clubs like the Mazamas\, the Skyliners\, and the Obsidians served as informal search and rescue units\, keeping Oregonians safe in the mountains\, rivers\, and wilderness areas. After World War II\, Oregon’s volunteer teams began to professionalize and became some of the most effective units in the country. Join author Glenn Voelz as he recounts the history of Oregon Search and Rescue. \nGlenn Voelz served as an intelligence officer for 25 years in the Army\, holding senior leadership positions at the Pentagon\, the White House Situation Room\, and NATO headquarters in Brussels\, Belgium. He was an assistant professor of history at West Point and has authored several books on Oregon history\, including Mount Bachelor: A History\, Oregon Search & Rescue: Answering the Call\, and The Oregon Skyline Trail. He serves as a board member of the Deschutes County Historical Society and the Deschutes Historical Museum. \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m.\, Presentation begins at 7:00 p.m.  Reservations Required\, Click here for tickets \n Click here to purchase “Oregon Search & Rescue: Answering the Call”; books will be available for sale at the presentation as well.

SUMMARY:January History Pub: About Bend Beer: A History of Brewing in Central Oregon
DESCRIPTION:With more breweries per capita than any other Oregon city\, Bend is a beer Mecca. Prior to Prohibition\, the state had a burgeoning brewing industry and plenty of saloons to cater to the needs of the hardy frontiersmen who settled Central Oregon. The teetotaling ’20s brought all that to a screeching halt. Fifty years later\, the arrival of pioneers like Deschutes Brewery and Bend Brewing Company breathed new life into Bend’s beer and brought about the booming industry for which the area is known today. Author and creator of “The Brew Site” Jon Abernathy traces Bend and Central Oregon’s hoppy history from early settlement to the present day\, sharing the stories behind its most famous breweries and the communities that have fostered the industry. \n  \n  \nJon Abernathy has been blogging about craft beer for more than a decade and drinking and homebrewing it for far longer. Having grown up in Central Oregon\, Jon went to school in Spokane\, Washington\, graduating from Eastern Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in French and ultimately began working in the computer industry as a web developer after returning to Bend. Blogging was a natural outlet for a web developer with a love of writing (and beer)\, and in 2004\, Jon launched The Brew Site\, a blog dedicated to all things beer and brewing. The blog has gone on to become the longest-running American beer blog and has documented the change and rapid growth that has characterized the Bend and Central Oregon brewing scene. You can visit the companion website to Jon’s book\, Bend Beer: A History of Brewing in Central Oregon at bendbeerhistory.com. \n  \nPresentation begins at 7:00 p.m.\, Doors open at 6:00 p.m. \nClick Here for Tickets: $5 each.

SUMMARY:March 2026 History Pub
DESCRIPTION:About The Changing Skyline—100 Years of Landscape Change in Central Oregon\nDuring the summer of 1920\, Frederick William Cleator (1883-1957)\, a Forest Service recreational planner\, surveyed and signposted the Skyline Trail. This trail\, first laid out between Crater Lake and Mount Jefferson\, was a predecessor to the Pacific Crest Trail\, which\, decades later\, completed Cleator’s dream of a recreational trail running from Mexico to Canada. During his survey\, Cleator took more than two hundred photographs of peaks\, forest glens\, lake shorelines\, and scenic vistas. These photographs show the landscape of the time. \nIn the summer of 2020\, with the help of many friends and colleagues\, Jim O’Connor retraced Cleator’s steps\, re-photographing the landscape almost exactly a hundred years later\, to the hour. These centennial counterparts show-in ways otherwise hard to know or describe-the changing skyline\, forests\, and glaciers\, and the human influence on the Central Oregon Cascade Range. \nAbout Jim O’Connor\nJim O’Connor is a geologist in Portland\, Oregon. He is an expert in the processes and events that shape the Pacific Northwest’s remarkable and diverse scenery. Jim holds a degree in geological science from the University of Washington and a Masters and PhD from the University of Arizona. Jim has spent the last 30+ years hiking\, wading\, boating\, studying and writing about the rivers\, glaciers\, and landscapes of Oregon. \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m.\nPresentation begins at 7:00 p.m. \nCLICK HERE TO BUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:February 2026 History Pub: A Big Man from a Small Place: Robert Sawyer\, the Bend Bulletin\, and the Columbia River
DESCRIPTION:Robert Sawyer\, publisher and editor of the Bend Bulletin\, played a key role in regional and national politics from 1917 to 1953 as a conservative activist for environmental conservation and irrigated agriculture. With no love for the New Deal\, he participated in national policy debates\, injecting his central Oregon viewpoint.  One of his most effective campaigns was part of a regional and national contest over control of the Columbia River\, the outcome of which determined how the “River of the West” was developed and managed. \n  \n  \nWilliam L. Lang is emeritus professor of history at Portland State University\, where he teaches environmental and public history. From 1977 to 1989\, Lang was editor of Montana\, the Magazine of Western History\, and in 1991 joined Mike Malone and Richard Roeder as a third author of Montana: A History of Two Centuries. He has written or edited seven books on Pacific Northwest history. From 1990 to 2003\, Lang directed the Center for Columbia River History. He is currently executive editor of the Oregon Encyclopedia of History & Culture. \n  \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m.\nPresentation begins at 7:00 p.m.\nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS

SUMMARY:March History Pub: About the Changing Skyline- 100 Years of Landscape Change in Central Oregon
DESCRIPTION:During the summer of 1920\, Frederick William Cleator (1883-1957)\, a Forest Service recreational planner\, surveyed and signposted the Skyline Trail. \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m.\, Presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. \nClick Here to buy tickets

SUMMARY:Read/Create: A Novel Idea Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Novel Idea: Read/Create exhibit features artwork inspired by the 2026 titles Super Sonic by Thomas Kohnstamm and the youth edition\, Hope in The Valley by Mitali Perkens. The exhibit opens Saturday\, April 11 through June 13\, 2026. \nSuper Sonic launches readers into a kaleidoscopic tale of the generations of interrelated families who breathed life into a small\, hilltop community near Seattle. The story cuts in time from the arrival of white settlers’ ships to the last indigenous landowner fighting to hold on to scraps of his ancestral home. It interweaves an opioid-addicted nineteenth-century conman-cum-civic booster\, a disgraced Navy seaman building an airplane that travels faster than sound\, a stay-at-home dad hustling to open the city’s first legal weed shop\, and a Japanese internment survivor. \nHope in The Valley follows twelve-year-old Indian-American Pandita Paul\, who doesn’t like change. She’s not ready to start middle school and leave the comforts of childhood behind. Most of all\, Pandita doesn’t want to feel like she’s leaving her mother\, who died a few years ago\, behind. Pandita is planning to spend most of her summer break reading in her favorite place\, the abandoned but majestic mansion across the street. When the town announces that the old home will be bulldozed in favor of new\, maybe affordable\, housing\, Pandita must find her voice and the strength to move on in order to give her community hope. \n“Passage of Place” by Cindy O’Neal \n“How We Cope with Change” by Gaye Lawson \nCentral Oregon’s own Mt Bachelor Quilt Guild members have been hard at work creating original artwork for the exhibit. Over 20 quilts will be on display\, representing personal interpretations of this year’s book selections. \nVisitors receive free admission by showing their library card for the duration of the exhibit. \nClick Here for more information about this year’s Novel Idea programming
