Atkinson is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of eight narrative histories about five American wars\, including The Long Gray Line\, the Liberation Trilogy (An Army at Dawn\, The Day of Battle\, and The Guns at Last Light)\, and The British Are Coming\, the first volume of the Revolution Trilogy.   \nAtkinson worked as a reporter\, foreign correspondent\, and senior editor for two decades at The Washington Post. His last assignments were covering the 101st Airborne during the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and writing about roadside bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2007. Born in Munich\, Germany\, Atkinson is the son of a U.S. Army officer and grew up on military posts. SUMMARY:Come Along on the Oregon Trail
DESCRIPTION:Between 1841 to1869 more than 350\,000 people emigrated along the Oregon Trail. The 2\,000-mile journey was difficult and dangerous. Travelers traversed unfamiliar prairies\, deserts\, rivers\, and mountains with minimal help along the way.\nJoin Lynda Paznokas as she shares her insights into the rationale behind making the journey West\, the treacherous landscapes they crossed\, and the reality discovered at the end of the trail. Using photographs\, journal entries\, and Lynda’s own research\, “Come Along on the Oregon Trail” sheds light on misconceptions about this fascinating and complicated time in United States history.\nThis free presentation starts at 2:30 pm in the Deschutes Historical Museum’s research library.\nSpace is limited\nOn-site parking is available.\n\nLynda Paznokas’ interest in the Oregon Trail began in grade school\, captured by the Oregon Trail stories brought to life by her fourth-grade teacher. Her fascination grew while researching her family’s trail blazing history West. Over the past decade Lynda has photographed the Oregon Trail from Missouri to Oregon\, gaining a new appreciation for the journey and historical complexities comprising this moment in U.S. history.\nAs an elementary and middle school teacher she has shared her enthusiasm of history with her students. She has worked as an Elementary Curriculum Specialist for the Bend-La Pine School District and has taught future teachers at the university level.\nHer book\, Pathways of America: The Oregon Trail\, assists educators\, encouraging students to develop a variety of critical thinking skills around this subject.

DESCRIPTION:REFLECTIONS OF HISTORY: An Architectural Walking Tour\nStroll through the Drake Park Neighborhood Historic District and go back in time when walking was the thing to do and neighborhoods were all about proximity to town. Participants will be introduced to the architectural styles represented in the neighborhood\, coupled with stories of changing times in a growing community.\nThe Deschutes Historical Museum provides walking tours of historical significance around Bend’s historic downtown district\, neighborhoods\, and sites Saturdays May through August. All tours leave the museum at 10:30 a.m. and are led by knowledgeable and trained museum volunteers. Tours are subject to change and cancellation\, operating rain or shine. For more information call 541-389-1813 or email info@deschuteshistory.org\nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED as space is limited.\nTours begin and end at the Deschutes Historical Museum.\nTime: 10:30 a.m.\, approximately 90 minutes\nLength: 1-mile walking through historic neighborhoods.
