SUMMARY:March 2026 History Pub
DESCRIPTION:About The Changing Skyline—100 Years of Landscape Change in Central Oregon\nDuring the summer of 1920\, Frederick William Cleator (1883-1957)\, a Forest Service recreational planner\, surveyed and signposted the Skyline Trail. This trail\, first laid out between Crater Lake and Mount Jefferson\, was a predecessor to the Pacific Crest Trail\, which\, decades later\, completed Cleator’s dream of a recreational trail running from Mexico to Canada. During his survey\, Cleator took more than two hundred photographs of peaks\, forest glens\, lake shorelines\, and scenic vistas. These photographs show the landscape of the time. \nIn the summer of 2020\, with the help of many friends and colleagues\, Jim O’Connor retraced Cleator’s steps\, re-photographing the landscape almost exactly a hundred years later\, to the hour. These centennial counterparts show-in ways otherwise hard to know or describe-the changing skyline\, forests\, and glaciers\, and the human influence on the Central Oregon Cascade Range. \nAbout Jim O’Connor\nJim O’Connor is a geologist in Portland\, Oregon. He is an expert in the processes and events that shape the Pacific Northwest’s remarkable and diverse scenery. Jim holds a degree in geological science from the University of Washington and a Masters and PhD from the University of Arizona. Jim has spent the last 30+ years hiking\, wading\, boating\, studying and writing about the rivers\, glaciers\, and landscapes of Oregon. \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m.\nPresentation begins at 7:00 p.m. \nCLICK HERE TO BUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:February 2026 History Pub: A Big Man from a Small Place: Robert Sawyer\, the Bend Bulletin\, and the Columbia River
DESCRIPTION:Robert Sawyer\, publisher and editor of the Bend Bulletin\, played a key role in regional and national politics from 1917 to 1953 as a conservative activist for environmental conservation and irrigated agriculture. With no love for the New Deal\, he participated in national policy debates\, injecting his central Oregon viewpoint.  One of his most effective campaigns was part of a regional and national contest over control of the Columbia River\, the outcome of which determined how the “River of the West” was developed and managed. \n  \n  \nWilliam L. Lang is emeritus professor of history at Portland State University\, where he teaches environmental and public history. From 1977 to 1989\, Lang was editor of Montana\, the Magazine of Western History\, and in 1991 joined Mike Malone and Richard Roeder as a third author of Montana: A History of Two Centuries. He has written or edited seven books on Pacific Northwest history. From 1990 to 2003\, Lang directed the Center for Columbia River History. He is currently executive editor of the Oregon Encyclopedia of History & Culture. \n  \nDoors open at 6:00 p.m.\nPresentation begins at 7:00 p.m.\nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS
